On December 16, 1974, Tennessee defeated Maryland 7-3 in the Liberty Bowl at Memphis Memorial Stadium. Maryland's legendary defensive tackle Randy White was named the game's Most Valuable Player — despite Maryland losing the game! The official Liberty Bowl records list White as the 1974 MVP.

White's performance helped keep Tennessee's offense bottled up for most of the night. The University of Tennessee's own bowl history describes Maryland as being led by All-America tackle Randy White in the defensive struggle.

HALL OF FAME CAREER

Randy White went on to become one of the greatest defensive linemen in football history. The Dallas Cowboys selected him 2nd overall in the 1975 NFL Draft, and he spent his entire 14-year NFL career with Dallas. He was a 9-time First-Team All-Pro, 9-time Pro Bowler and co-MVP of Super Bowl XII. He was inducted into both the College Football Hall of Fame and Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1994.
